Tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal, the standard practice in US restaurants. Each person's total is rounded to the nearest cent; rounding remainders are folded into the last person's total so every per-person amount adds up to the exact grand total. This tool gives estimates, so verify totals against your receipt.

How to use it

  1. Enter your bill before tax and your local tax rate.
  2. Tap a tip percentage or type your own.
  3. Set the number of people, or switch to itemize so everyone pays for exactly what they ordered.

Tipping questions, answered

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

20% is the standard for good service in the US, 18% for average, and 25% or more for excellent service. Tip on the pre-tax amount unless the restaurant suggests otherwise.

Do you tip before or after tax?

Before tax. Tax is a government charge, not part of the service, so most etiquette guides recommend tipping on the subtotal. This calculator uses pre-tax tipping.

How do you split a bill evenly?

Add up the bill, tax, and tip to get the grand total, then divide by the number of people. Rounding to whole cents can leave a stray cent; the last person covers the difference so the math checks out.

What if everyone ordered different things?

Use the itemize mode. Enter each person's pre-tax subtotal and the calculator splits tax and tip proportionally, so nobody pays for anyone else's appetizer.
