How Much to Tip for Pizza Delivery: 20 Percent Rule and the $5 Minimum

Delivery drivers spend their own gas, their own car, and their own time to bring dinner to your door. Here is the standard rate, the small-order rule most people get wrong, and three worked examples.

Tip pizza delivery drivers 20 percent of the pre-tax order total, with a $5 minimum on small orders. A $45 order gets a $9 tip; a $14 order gets $5, not $2.80. Delivery fees go to the restaurant or the app, not the driver, so they do not count as a tip. Add more in bad weather or for long drives.

The 20 percent rule

Delivery tipping follows the restaurant standard: 20 percent of the pre-tax order total for normal service, more for anything above and beyond. The driver is doing the job a server does, plus driving, in their own vehicle, on their own fuel. The math is the same as a restaurant tip, and the tip calculator handles it in one tap if you want the number instantly.

The $5 minimum on small orders

This is the rule people miss. A $14 pizza order at 20 percent is 14 x 0.20 = $2.80. That is not a real tip for a real trip. Set a $5 floor on small orders. The driver made the same drive whether your order was $14 or $40, so the tip should reflect the trip, not just the math. Under $25 or so, the floor rules. Over $25, the percentage rules.

Worked example 1: the standard order

A $45 pizza and wings order. The tip is 45 x 0.20 = $9.00. Total out of pocket: $54 plus tax. This is the textbook case, and 20 percent is exactly right for a normal, on-time delivery.

Worked example 2: the small order

A $14 single-pizza order. The formula gives 14 x 0.20 = $2.80, but the $5 minimum overrides it. Tip $5. If the driver was fast and the pizza arrived hot, $6 or $7 turns an ordinary order into someone's favorite stop of the night.

Worked example 3: the big game-night order

A $90 order for the whole group. The tip is 90 x 0.20 = $18. Big orders earn the full percentage because the driver carried a lot, probably made multiple trips to the car, and kept everything organized. For orders over $75, consider rounding up past 20 percent: $20 on $90 is about 22 percent and costs you almost nothing extra.

Delivery fees are not tips

The $2.99 or $4.99 delivery fee on your receipt goes to the restaurant or the delivery app. It does not go to the driver. This is the single most common tipping mistake in delivery: people see the fee, assume the driver is covered, and tip small. They are not. Always tip on top of the fee, calculated on the pre-tax food total.

When to tip more than 20 percent

  • Bad weather. Rain, snow, and extreme heat make driving harder and slower. Add $3 to $5.
  • Long drives. If you are at the edge of the delivery zone, the driver spent real time and gas getting to you. Add a few dollars.
  • Complicated orders. Five pizzas, two-liter bottles, and a salad for a party take more handling than one box. Tip 22 to 25 percent.
  • Apartments and offices. Finding unit 4B on the third floor of a building with no elevator is work. Round up.

Cash or in the app?

Cash is slightly better because the driver keeps all of it immediately, but in-app tips on pizza orders from the restaurant itself generally reach the driver in full. On third-party apps, cash avoids any chance of the tip being used to subsidize base pay. Either way, tip before or at delivery, not after, so the driver knows the trip is worth taking.

Wondering about takeout tipping when you pick the pizza up yourself? The standard there is lower: 10 percent, because nobody drove to you.

Frequently asked questions

How much should you tip a pizza delivery driver?

20 percent of the pre-tax order total, with a $5 minimum on small orders. A $45 order gets a $9 tip; a $14 order gets $5 instead of the $2.80 the formula gives. Add more in bad weather or for long drives.

Is $5 a good tip for delivery?

On a small order under about $25, yes, $5 is the right floor. The driver made the same trip whether your order was $14 or $40. On larger orders, tip the full 20 percent instead: $5 on a $45 order would be only 11 percent.

Should you tip on the delivery fee?

Tip on the food total, and treat the delivery fee as separate: it goes to the restaurant or the app, not the driver. A delivery fee is not a tip, so always add your own tip on top of it.

How much do you tip for food delivery in bad weather?

Add $3 to $5 on top of the standard 20 percent. Rain, snow, and extreme heat make the drive slower and riskier, and fewer drivers are out, so the ones working earn the premium.

Do delivery drivers prefer cash tips?

Cash is slightly better because the driver keeps all of it immediately with no chance of an app using it to subsidize base pay. In-app tips on direct restaurant orders generally reach the driver in full.
